We have asked ourselves this question and conducted our own research!
In order to study the quantitative indicators of the semen analysis and the extent of sperm DNA fragmentation depending on the time of abstinence of men, we have analyzed the test results of 193 men aged 20 to 55 years. Indicators of semen analysis were calculated manually in the Makler chamber.

The analysis of the obtained data revealed an authentic increase over the time of abstinence of the amount of ejaculate, the concentration of spermatozoa per 1 ml of ejaculate on average, the total number of spermatozoa. In addition, the percentage of total motile spermatozoa, as well as progressively motile spermatozoa, increases with time of abstinence. The optimal indicators for fertilization are on the 6-8 day of abstinence

With increasing abstinence time, we observed an authentic increase in the extent of sperm DNA fragmentation. The optimal abstinence time for the extent of sperm DNA fragmentation is 1-2 days, with which the indicator increases.

A number of trends have been identified:
🔻 There was a slight increase in the morphology range of normal sperm forms. With the time of abstinence, the percentage of immotile spermatozoa decreases. The share of non-progressive motile sperm decreased by 1–1.2%.
🔺 In 193 patients there was an increase in the concentration and total number of sperm, the share of motile, progressive motile spermatozoa and morphology indicators of normal sperm forms, which has positive effect for fertilization, however, increases also the extent of sperm DNA fragmentation, which negatively affects fertilization.
Optimal important indicators of the semen analysis are on the 6 — 8 day, and the extent of sperm DNA fragmentation – 1 — 2 day of abstinence.

Therefore, 2 days of abstinence is optimal for ICSI fertilization to maintain a low level of sperm DNA fragmentation. While for IUI — it was recommended to have 5 days of abstinence in order to maintain a sufficient level of DNA fragmentation and a high percentage of progressive motile spermatozoa.
